Nikola Tesla – Electrical Genius?

Nikola Tesla was born in the mid 19th Century and spent most of his live inventing and many believe his ideas may hold the key to generating mass renewable energy sources. He clearly had a highly creative and imaginative mind, with many inventions registered with the US Patent office.  Most of his work was in the fields of Electricity and electromechanical engineering. For this reason, and given his mastery of the subject, Tesla for a short period worked with Thomas Edison ( the inventor the amongst other things the Electric Light bulb). However the two of them never really got on, and hence fairly soon Tesla went out and set up in business on his own.

The disagreement between Tesla and Edison was not just personal; they had different views of electricity and what made up an efficient electrical system as well.

A good example is Tesla criticism of Edison’s love of Direct current systems. Tesla argued that the efficiency and performance of electrical systems could be significantly improved by using alternating current. Ultimately Tesla won this particular argument, with Alternating Current proving over time that is was the superior technology and driving the progress of electrical power over the next century.

Another area that Tesla looked into was wireless communication, or to put it another way, the radio. One of his patents (from 1896) was for a basic radio system.

It is widely accepted that Marconi used these basic designs and built upon them to develop his famous radio transmitter that first crossed the Atlantic in 1901. As well as this involvement in the invention of the Radio Transmitter, Tesla also worked in areas such as lasers, neon devices, nuclear physics, radar, x-rays, robotics and even computer science.

Perhaps Tesla’s greatest invention was the discovery of ‘terrestrial stationary waves’. The essence of this discovery was the idea that they earth could be used as a massive conductor that was responsive to electrical vibrations of the a certain frequency. Tesla claimed to have undertaken many experiments where we was able to light lamps over great distances without wires. The potential for this discovery was immense, and hence the interest of the wealthy men of the time was aroused. In particular Tesla was supported by the wealthy J. Pierpont Morgan who funded the building of Tesla’s Wardenclyffe Laboratory in Long Island at the beginning of the 20th century.  It was here that Tesla planned to build a large scale magnifying transmitter that would discharge electricity at high frequency. The result he suggested would be to create a giant dynamo out of the earth and transport never ending electricity throughout the world.

However this transmitter was never to see the light of day. Morgan, his funder, eventually realised what the effect would be of everyone having free energy would have on his energy company investments and pulled the plug on Tesla’s funding. Hence this was one if the Nikola Tesla inventions never to be properly built.

I found this clip from an old BBC documentary that looked at the genius of Nikola Tesla that I am sure you will find interesting, and will certainly underline the point that the man was truly inspirational.

It does seem a shame that Tesla never managed to fulfill his true potential. Some believe that his plans for creating wide spread free energy have been kept suppressed over the years by self interested big business. However with the spread of information brought about by the internet, so more and more people are starting to hear of the Nikola Tesla Inventions and experimenting again with some of his principles
