Energy Security

The IssueEnergy Security

As the world slowly but surely uses up its finite supplies of fossil fuels, so the subject of energy security is one that is increasingly being discussed. This discussion is no longer just taking place in Government and between the energy companies, it is also being discussed by ordinary people. The reason for this is that people are increasingly coming to see how in our lifetimes we might begin to run out of the ready supply of traditional energy sources such as oil, gas and coal. Add to this problem the fact that major reserves of these energy sources are controlled by hostile governments around the world, and it becomes an increasingly worrying situation. The result is that our energy future is very uncertain, and we are right to be concerned about our energy security. Those of us with children and grandchildren are even more concerned about this situation.

One way Government and big business are seeking to tackle this situation is through more daring and dangerous exploration for fossil fuels. This is reaping some rewards, for example in late summer of 2011, larger reserves of gas were reportedly identified under mainland Britain. Other finds will no doubt occur. However a feature of the current efforts to unearth new reserves of fossil fuels is the increased danger and costs (both financial and environmental) involved. Most people will recall the horrendous financial cost and environmental damage (not to mention loss of human life) that resulted from BP’s oil exploration in the Atlantic in 2010. This clearly shows the cost of extracting fossil fuel in the 21st Century. Even if the energy companies manage to avoid further loss of live and environmental damage, we can be sure that the cost of oil and gas will rise as these fuels are extracted from increasingly inaccessible locations.

The Solutions

To put is simply if we are going to address our Energy Security we need to seek out renewable energy sources. We need to begin to generate our energy in ways that we can control, that won’t run out, and that is cheap to produce. Whilst we can’t, and won’t, stop using fossil fuels overnight, they clearly cannot be part of a long term energy security strategy. As individual homeowners we have no control over these sources of energy, and increasingly our Governments will lose control as well. Fossil fuels will run out. It took hundreds of thousands of years for it to be created in the first place, we can’t make any more. Finally the energy from fossil fuels will become increasingly more expensive for us to use to heat our homes.

To ensure our energy security we have to move towards increasing use of energy from Renewable Sources. To be fair to them, Governments and big business are doing this, if maybe not fast enough. Thankfully there are many ways that homeowners can begin to take this matter into their own hands and begin to secure their own households energy security. Erecting your own wind turbine or solar panel is an increasingly easy and cheap solution that will put you in control of your own energy reducing your reliance on fossil fuels. It is something I recommend you look into if you are concerned about your energy security.
